Description

Advanced Excel for Modeling

Excel is an incredibly complex toolkit.

Many people use Excel in their day to day work. For most, it’s used for little more than keeping a list, but for those who build models or work with large data sets, we know that there are many layers of complexity in the software and many different approaches to solving a problem. To make things worse, each new version adds additional tools and functions. Regular users want to learn more about the tool, but where to begin?

This class is a survey course of the more advanced tools in Excel. This class is geared for attendees who are very comfortable using Excel to solve problems. An emphasis will be placed on financial problems, but all of the tools and functions that are explored could equally apply to other fields of study.

This class is targeted for:

  • Asset, portfolio, and fund managers
  • Investors or acquisition professionals who are managing large scale models for multiple assets
  • Development professionals who are managing multi-phase and complex models
  • Anyone in a reporting role that needs to manipulate large datasets.

We will cover advanced tools and functions in-depth including:

  • Advanced Formulas and Functions
    • Proper use of LOOKUPs, INDEX(MATCH()), XLOOKUP(), and INDIRECT() functions
    • Dynamic Arrays and Related Functions
    • What-If Analysis
    • Pivot Table and Pivot Chart
  • Power Query/”Get and Transform Data”
  • Introduction to Power BI
  • Visual Basic
  • Advanced What-If Tools Including multi-dimensional Data Tables
  • Solutions to Common Problems
  • Conditional Formatting “Hacks”
  • Valuation Models that use a “Real Options Approach”
  • Optimizing Existing Model for Calculational Speed and Tools to Measure Speed
  • Breaking Internal Rate of Return Calculations
  • Mixed-Use Partitioning and Varying the Discount Rate
  • Specific asset management and portfolio management issues
  • A special emphasis will be made on the construction of models that can be used again and again, and how to audit existing models in a time-efficient manner.
  • And a lot more… bring your hardest questions, issues, and challenges!

All attendees will receive a suite of unlocked spreadsheets in Excel for their own professional use.

Attendees taking this workshop should have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel. In addition, attendees should bring their own laptop to this session.

Class Size

All open enrollment courses are restricted to no more than 20 attendees in order to maximize teacher to student interaction. Students will also receive a complete set of spreadsheets for all examples and case studies that are discussed in class.
